More about Disapproving Owls:
In 2018, a barred owl started going for walks with my dogs and i. I named her Whisper. She would swoop down and fly past me so slowly, so close, that if i was a very stupid person i could have reached out and touched her. Then she would alight on a branch ten or fifteen steps ahead of us, sometimes within reach, sometimes a little ways above our heads. She would fluff her feathers or swivel her head as she waited for us to pass. Once we’d chosen which path we were taking, she would flap by me again, just five or six feet from the ground, the air from her feathers blowing across the side of my face. She’d choose a new perch, wait, catch up… This happened for less than a year, and then she stopped.
Everyone thinks they know why she flew along besides us, but when given every detail, an actual ornithologist gave me a shrug. It’s just a cool little mystery. Like anyone who owns black nail polish, i have always thought owls were fascinating, but our repeated encounters with Whisper forged my fascination into something my sketchbooks might suggest is more like an obsession.
