hindsight: September

All my dirty secrets are swept into this monthly post. You can get it via email (which also enters you into a free art giveaway!) or by the ancient and reliable art of RSS. I miss the Internet era when algorithms weren’t shoving stuff in our faces all the time, so here’s a way to sign up for my junk if you want to make sure you don’t miss it. ❥

Art

I felt really burned out after the wildfires (and i’m still too tired to come up with a way to rephrase that to avoid the pun). September’s lack of natural disasters and advent of cooler, damper weather began healing me from the August chaos, though. I made more art!

I mean, it’s not the greatest art i’ve ever made, but i’ve been far more prolific and that’s my gateway to quality.

Anecdote

When i turned five, my loving, foolish parents told me i could choose my party. Without hesitation, i demanded they take me to Edmonds Beach at low tide so i could get my chubby little fingers on the weirdest, rarest creatures in the littoral zone. Unfortunately for the adults, low tide for my birthday fell at a very chilly 6:00 a.m.

Imagine, if you will, a handful of shivering, bored adults in jackets, holding hot coffees as they cluster under the pier to stay out of the cold drizzle. Nearby, a little goblin stomps about in galoshes, flipping over barnacle-carpeted rocks and kidnapping terrified wildlife. For hours, i hauled my bucket of seawater all over that shoreline. Crabs, isopods, chitons, limpets, whelks, sculpin, eels, and sea stars: nothing was safe from my numb, red little fingers snatching them from their hidey holes.

The next year, the adults suggested we go to a restaurant. (I did not enjoy this and there is concrete evidence of my displeasure that would hold up in a court of law.) I’m definitely a creature that belongs on a cold, wet seashore–not a sticky vinyl booth.

I lied about doubling up in September, and about making it to the post office, but at least we got the raffles done! I had my mom roll the die for August and my dad threw his first (and probably last, lol) D20 ever for September.

I’m starting a new schedule on October 1st so stuff like visiting the post office doesn’t fall through the cracks.

Merch

My shop is back and it works just fine, but i am still having fun showing you work from my friends. My friend Johanna’s shop has a kind of “pensive, artistic horror” vibe, with an emphasis on retro/historical/gothy subjects:

She also makes lovely comics and books. Some day, i hope to own the full collection! ❥
